WINNIPEG, NOVEMBER 29, 2022 – Manitoba Underdogs Rescue (MUR) is fundraising to help save Isaac, a one-year-old Shepherd mix who was surrendered to the rescue with severe injuries to the face and the head.
Veterinarians believe his primary injury, a 1.5 – 2 centimetre hole that exposes his skull, was possibly caused by an ice-pick or a bullet. Isaac’s wound is so bad that veterinarians and the rescue aren’t sure how he survived the initial attack.
“We were called to a remote community by a by-law officer who was concerned about a dog in the community. When we showed up, we were absolutely horrified by what we saw,’ said Manitoba Underdogs Rescue Executive Director Jessica Hansen. “Isaac had been living with this wound for weeks, and the infection was overwhelming. In addition to the hole, his left ear is almost completely gone, and the front of his face is skinned, infected, and oozing – it’s just too horrible to even think about.”
Isaac was surrendered to MUR care by his owners, who didn’t have the resources to help him.
“This is a heartbreaking case. Isaac is absolutely the sweetest boy. He has the brightest personality and that’s what’s encouraging him to fight for him. He wants to live, and he deserves a great home where he can be safe and loved,” MUR Executive Director Jessica Hansen.
Care for Isaac will be long and expensive. He is in-hospital receiving IV fluids, antibiotics, pain medication and requires daily dressing changes, and several medications, and will require surgery to eventually close the hole that currently exposes his skull.
